It is stated that you can turn into a villain or a hero. Christian Bale is now a villain, this time for Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder. The antagonist is powerful, and the story is true to the comic book plot well and brings back the crowd-favourite, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). There’salso the outrageous humor that is unique to director Taika Waititi. Yet, Love and Thunder, although a strong independent film, fails to meet the standards of the previous Thor sequel, Thor: Ragnarok (2017).

Thor has been a major part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for more than a decade however his stand-alone films have either been successful or missed the mark entirely. While the story of the origins of Thor (2011) was a decent start, Thor: The Dark World (2013) was an awful entry. However, Thor: Ragnarok 2017 will be in everyone’s most-watched five MCU films. The return of the Hemsworth – Waititi collaboration meant expectations were extremely high ahead of the movie’s release.
Gorr (Bale) Gorr (Bale), the god who wants to wipe out all gods strikes New Asgard to steal Stormbreaker. Thor must stop the god butcher by joining up with Tessa Thompson, Korg (Waititi), and Jane Foster, his ex-girlfriend who is now Mighty Thor. The plot is straightforward unlike the recent Marvel films, and the actors are great in the film. Hemsworth aces the titular character who suffers from the midlife crisis, however Bale and Portman make an impact. As evidence of Bale’s abilities, the pre-title credit scene stands. Gorr could well be the next Thanos for an MCU that’s in need of good superheroes, and Bale brings in a certain creepiness to the character, however, there’s nothing a amount more.
Portman plays Mjolnir’s cancerous ex-girlfriend. Given how Marvel seems to be committed to handing over the mantles of Hawkeye and in a few months, Hulk, to women characters, I first expected the Mighty Thor to be a similar tick mark in the representation checklist. The film tells a touching tale about an astrophysicist who is able display her biceps in more scenes than one.
Marvel is known for its own flexing through all the cameos that are in this film. We also get to see the Guardians of the Galaxy cast that includes Sam Neill and Matt Damon reprising their roles in Thor Ragnarok’s Loki, Odin and Thor in turn. Additionally, we see Melissa McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone playing Hela and the director of the Asgardian play as well as the director of an Asgardian play. Waititi has since Ragnarok directed Oscar-winning Jojo Rabbit, is back in his preferred genre. It’s fun to see the likes of a pair of noisy goats and Korg’s narration on Thor’s backstory. Thor does leg-splits. Valkyrie, Old Spice’s mascot, is introduced.
There’s also a running gag of Thor seeking his Mjolnir and being afraid by Stormbreaker’s jealousy. These gags work, but they are at the expense of intense emotion. They also reveal the weak plot. Thor: Love and Thunder deals with many types love, from father-daughter bonds to complex romances between discordant lovers… There’s a parallel between Gorr losing his respect for Rapu and Thor being disillusioned by Zeus (played here by Russell Crowe). These concepts are endless but…
There are numerous easter eggs to be found and even callbacks to films like Interstellar as well as Harry Potter. There’s a photo of the god who died, Falligar, taken straight from comics. We see Hemsworth wearing the original Thor costumes comic-book readers will recognize. When Thor takes on the world in a battle with Zeus Then we see a tattoo reading ‘RIP Loki and the trickster’s helmet etched on Thor’s back. Then we are introduced to the wicked Necrosword and given how Mjolnir and Stormbreaker seem to have the ability to think for themselves and are able to control their own minds, it’s interesting to observe the weapons shown to be able to control people.
What we saw with Shang Chi’s 10 rings, Ms Marvel’s magical bangle and the Ebony blade that was featured in the Eternals post-credits scene. Following the recent Marvel show, Moonknight, the line, “Gods will use you but they will never make you stronger” seems relatable. There’s a reference to Valkyrie losing her beloved girlfriend in the midst of war, and Korg being in love with another Kronan man.
The first portion reminds us of all the colors we enjoyed in Ragnarok but a lot of the second part takes place in the darkness, with everything being black and white. It’s important to mention that the action scenes that are monochrome are quite satisfying.
Hemsworth as Thor will remain in the role however, which is an immense relief to MCU fans who’ve seen the original Avengers or risk their lives, or hang up their heads.
